The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several key reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements could unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
