The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Flight Fears
In a document approving the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
The senator wrote on online platforms on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of the former president's move to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a record of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The judges found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 national vote.
