Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
